Founded by Abhijeet Kelkar in 2009, Kelkar Foods & Fragrances has come a long way.
The original family business of the Kelkar family was their attar business, which was started in 1919 by Abhijeet's grandfather. Back in the days, the company sold attar, gulabjal (rose water), and gulkand, the latter two being the by-products of attar production.
However, Abhijeet had a vision. He quit his lucrative job with a highly reputable pharma company in Bangalore to pursue his passion of taking his family attar business to another level. In the September of 2009, Kelkar Foods & Fragrances was incorporated. Through this company, Abhijeet added numerous highly innovative product offerings to the portfolio of his family's attar business. These products were inspired by the changing times, as well as the changing needs of the people and the industry at large.
During the early 2000s, the spa industry was flourishing, and several spas had sprung up in the major cities across the country. This inspired Abhieet to add spa oils to his product line. He became the largest supplier of carrier oils, fragrance oils, essential oils, body massage oils, etc. to spas across the country. So much so, that his customer base included all the major spa chains in the country, including those of five-star hotels. He established his name in the spa industry by becoming the exclusive supplier to prominent spa chains such as O2 Spa, Aromathai, and Sukho Thai, to name a few. He also continues to supply to the spas of five-star hotels such as Hyatt, Marriott, Radisson, and Westin.
Following the success of his spa oils business, the advent of customized skin and hair care products caught Abhijeet's attention. He realized that a large number of people, women in particular, have developed a keen interest in making their own soaps, shampoos, creams, lotions, cleansers, and other skin & hair care products using natural ingredients that are suitable to their skin & hair types. Also, a number of recipes are available across the internet, the ingredients of which are easily available online. What's more, several sites also sell specialized containers such as lip balm pots, molds for soaps, spray bottles, bottles for lotions & hand creams, lipstick containers, etc. as they are in high demand. This has led to new additions to the product range of Kelkar Foods & Fragrances. They include bases for creams, shampoos, soaps, scrubs, body butters, as well as sulfate & paraben-free bases. The Kelkar brand has a reputation of three generations for providing quality fragrances. Now, customers can pursue their hobbies of customized homemade beauty products with raw material supplied by their very own trusted brand. Abhijeet hopes that this will further this trend in India, especially in Pune city.
